How to format a microSD card for Steam Deck safely
Use SteamOS Gaming Mode to prepare a card intended for your Steam Deck game library. This is official-source/spec-informed guidance, not a card-speed benchmark or a claim that every card can be repaired by formatting.

Using the Deck’s own control avoids guessing which filesystem and library structure SteamOS expects. A computer-side formatter can still be useful for diagnostics, but it is not the preferred final preparation path for a dedicated Steam game card.
If Steam Deck says the format failed
Repeated formatting is not a repair plan. Use the least-destructive checks first, especially if the card previously held a working library.
- Restart SteamOS once. Clear a temporary mount or storage-service problem before changing the card.
- Power down and reseat the card. Do not repeatedly eject it while the system is writing.
- Inspect the card and slot. Stop if there is physical damage, swelling elsewhere in the device, liquid exposure, or debris you cannot safely remove.

Do not accept a Windows format prompt blindly
A microSD card prepared by SteamOS may not appear in Windows like a normal exFAT removable drive. If Windows offers to format it, cancel unless erasing the Steam Deck library is your deliberate goal. Moving a card between SteamOS and Windows is not the same as moving a universally readable USB drive.
