ASUS’s port descriptions establish what the handheld exposes, not what a third-party dock preserves. Every added chipset, adapter, connector, and cable can narrow the working mode. Check the exact Ally model and exact dock revision rather than treating “USB-C dock” as one universal specification.
Choose a dock in five checks
Write down one target mode
Start with the actual screen and input: for example, 1080p/60 over HDMI or 1440p at a supported refresh over DisplayPort. Do not buy from “8K” or “gaming dock” language without a mode table.
Separate input from host pass-through
A dock accepting 100W does not necessarily send 100W to the Ally. Look for the host-delivery figure, then account for power used by the dock and attached USB devices.
Check cable, cradle, grip, and vents
The host cable should reach the chosen Ally port without pulling sideways. A cradle must fit the thicker Ally X or any grip while leaving intakes and exhausts clear.
Count the peripherals you really own

65W versus 100W dock power
ASUS lists a 65W, 20V/3.25A adapter for both the original Ally and Ally X. That makes 65W to the handheld the practical spec-matched target. A dock sits between the charger and handheld, however, and its electronics and attached devices use part of the input budget.

HDMI, DisplayPort, refresh rate, and VRR
Resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and variable refresh rate are separate capabilities. A listing that proves one does not prove the others. ASUS’s own ROG Gaming Charger Dock illustrates a bounded claim: ASUS publishes HDMI 2.0 output up to 1080p at 120Hz or 4K at 60Hz. That does not make those two modes a universal specification for third-party docks.
- For a TV: HDMI is usually the simplest connection. Confirm the selected TV input supports the mode, then enable enhanced-input settings only after basic output works.
- For a PC monitor: compare HDMI and DisplayPort support on the monitor itself. DisplayPort may be the clearer path when the desired monitor mode or adaptive-sync documentation is tied to that input.
- For VRR/FreeSync: require explicit support across the Ally port, dock or adapter, cable, display input, and selected mode. “120Hz” alone is not VRR.
- For 4K: treat 4K output support separately from game render performance. A dock can carry a 4K desktop signal without making a demanding game run well at native 4K.
ROG Ally dock no-signal troubleshooting order
- Save work and shut down cleanly. Disconnect the dock from the Ally, charger, display, and USB peripherals.
- Confirm the display input. Select the exact HDMI or DisplayPort input manually and test the cable/display with another known-good source when available.
- Reconnect power first. Connect the dock to a known-good USB-C PD charger and cable, then the display cable, then the Ally.
- Start at 1080p/60. In Windows display settings, use a conservative resolution and refresh rate before testing HDR, VRR, or higher modes.
