What the four workload groups mean
Simple rendering, long planning window
Balatro and Stardew Valley are the best long-flight candidates in this set. High brightness, downloads, Bluetooth devices, and an aging battery still reduce the result.
Strong handheld fit
Hades II sits in this group. A stable cap can keep the device from doing unnecessary work without turning every visual option down.
Plan around a few hours
Elden Ring, Diablo IV, and No Man’s Sky illustrate the middle. Their range can shift with game area, online activity, frame target, and patch behavior.
Outlet or power-bank territory
Large modern games can keep the system busy. Start with stable frame pacing; do not buy a power bank to mask unstable settings or a background download.
A repeatable way to check your own game
- Charge, update, then disconnect power. Finish downloads first and note the Steam Deck model, battery percentage, game version, and SteamOS version.
- Choose one representative area. A menu, cutscene, empty room, or opening tutorial is not a useful whole-game sample.
- Set brightness and radios deliberately. Keep brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, and external accessories consistent between runs.

Battery settings worth changing first
1. Frame cap and refresh
A stable 30 or 40 FPS target can avoid rendering work that the handheld screen or game does not need. Confirm pacing in demanding play, not only the average FPS counter.
2. Display brightness
The display uses power independently of the processor target. Lower brightness only to a comfortable, readable level; outdoor use may need more.
3. Expensive graphics effects
Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, crowd density, and view distance before making text and interfaces unreadably soft with aggressive upscaling.
4. Background work
Pause downloads, close unused launchers, and avoid interpreting update activity as normal game draw. Online play and voice chat can differ from offline use.
Power-bank planning without runtime promises
A power bank has two separate specifications: USB-C Power Delivery output and stored energy in watt-hours. Enough output keeps the Deck from discharging quickly under load; watt-hours determine the rough energy budget. Conversion loss and game draw prevent a simple “one full recharge equals X hours” promise.
