Hades 2 Steam Deck settings: test the Verified default before tuning

Hades II is currently Steam Deck Verified, and Valve says its default configuration is performant. That makes the supported default—not an old compatibility override—the right first test. This guide adds a repeatable 60 FPS check, a 40 FPS battery-oriented comparison, controller troubleshooting, and storage planning without pretending we measured a universal frame rate or runtime.

Use a real combat test: repeat the same late-run encounter with multiple enemies, projectiles, Boons, and screen effects. Record the game version, SteamOS version, Deck model, display refresh, frame cap, TDP state, brightness, and compatibility tool before comparing changes.

Recommended Hades 2 Steam Deck baseline

ControlStart hereReason
Compatibility toolValve defaultThe current report is Verified. Do not force an old Proton build before testing the supported path.
Resolution1280×800Matches the Deck panel’s 16:10 shape and gives interface text the expected handheld canvas.
Display / frame target60 Hz / 60 FPS testResponsive action benefits from motion clarity, but this is a target to validate in a demanding encounter—not a measured lock.
GraphicsVerified defaultEstablish the officially supported baseline before lowering quality or adding device-level scaling.
VSyncKeep the default firstAvoid changing presentation and frame limiting simultaneously; reject visible tearing or uneven pacing.
Steam Deck TDP limitOff for the first testConfirm the graphics and frame profile before constraining device power.
Manual GPU clockOffDo not add a second power variable until the baseline is repeatable.
Performance overlayUse temporarilyCheck pacing, power draw, and temperatures during the same encounter, then hide it for normal play.

Available graphics labels can change with patches. Photograph the current menu before tuning and keep the nearest current equivalent. Valve’s “performant default configuration” result does not specify a guaranteed frame rate, and this page does not turn it into one.

Compare 60 FPS and 40 FPS fairly

Responsive profile

60 Hz / 60 FPS test

Use the Verified default, native 800p canvas, no TDP limit, and the same encounter. Keep this profile only when combat, camera movement, and effects remain acceptably even.

Battery-oriented profile

40 Hz / 40 FPS test

Change only the display refresh and cap first. If pacing and input feel good, reduce the TDP limit in small steps and repeat the same demanding room after each change.

A repeatable Hades 2 tuning order

  1. Finish updates and restart. Complete stable SteamOS, game, and shader downloads before diagnosing a persistent issue.
  2. Restore Valve’s supported path. Use the default compatibility tool, built-in controls, and default game configuration for the first pass.
  3. Record one demanding encounter. Note the region, enemy mix, visible effects, game version, cap, refresh rate, and power state.
  4. Validate 60 FPS. Test the same route and encounter rather than judging only the Crossroads or a menu.
  5. Compare 40 FPS. Change refresh and cap together, but leave graphics and TDP unchanged for the first comparison.
  6. Tune power last. Reduce the Deck TDP limit gradually only after choosing the frame target. Stop when pacing worsens in the repeatable encounter.
  7. Recheck after patches. Restore the saved baseline after a major game or SteamOS update before stacking new tweaks.

Storage, saves, battery, and dock planning

Steam currently lists 11GB of available storage, full controller support, Steam Cloud, and a September 25, 2025 release date. Keep additional room for updates, shader data, captures, and other runs in your library. Use the storage planner before buying capacity, and follow the Steam Deck microSD compatibility guide if removable storage is the next step.

This page does not invent battery hours. Read total system draw during the same encounter and enter it in the battery estimator. Compare the 60 and 40 FPS profiles at matched brightness and wireless conditions so the result means something.

For docked play, Valve’s current compatibility report flags external controllers for the primary player. Read the Steam Deck docked TV and monitor guide, but do not buy a new dock solely to fix a game-specific controller limitation.

Frequently asked questions

What Hades 2 settings should I use on Steam Deck?

Start with Valve’s Verified default configuration at 1280×800 and leave the compatibility tool on its default. Test a 60 Hz/60 FPS profile during a busy encounter. If it is uneven or battery life matters more, compare 40 Hz/40 FPS without changing multiple graphics controls at once. These are editorial test targets, not personally measured guarantees.

Is Hades 2 Steam Deck Verified?

Yes. Valve’s compatibility endpoint currently resolves Hades II as category 3, Verified. It reports functional default controls, matching controller glyphs, legible interface text, and a performant default configuration. Valve also flags that external controllers are not supported for the primary player.

Should I play Hades 2 at 60 FPS or 40 FPS on Steam Deck?

Test 60 FPS first because responsive combat benefits from clear motion, but validate it in a busy late-run encounter rather than only at the Crossroads. A 40 Hz/40 FPS profile is a sensible battery-oriented comparison when it remains visually clear and evenly paced. This page does not claim either target is locked on every build and encounter.

How much storage does Hades 2 need on Steam Deck?

Steam currently lists 11GB of available storage. Keep extra room for updates, shader data, screenshots, cloud-save staging, and other games, and confirm the live install dialog before downloading.

Why does an external controller not control player one in Hades 2?

Valve’s current Deck report explicitly flags external controllers as unsupported for the primary player. Use the built-in Deck controls first, check controller order, remove conflicting remaps, and recheck the compatibility report after game updates rather than assuming a dock or controller is defective.

Were these Hades 2 Steam Deck settings personally benchmarked?

No. Handheld Settings Lab checked current Valve, Steam, and Supergiant public sources but did not personally benchmark the current game build, SteamOS version, compatibility layer, Deck model, battery, or thermals. The profiles are reproducible starting points without invented FPS or runtime measurements.

Sources and methodology

Sources were fetched successfully on August 21, 2026. Steam’s public product data supplied the September 25, 2025 release date, 11GB storage requirement, full controller support, Steam Cloud support, Supergiant developer/publisher identity, Windows requirements, and official image. Valve’s compatibility endpoint currently resolves Hades II as category 3, Verified, and reports functional default controls, matching glyphs, legible interface text, and a performant default configuration; it also flags external controllers as unsupported for the primary player. Supergiant’s official page establishes the publisher’s first-party game reference.

The 60 and 40 FPS profiles are conservative editorial test sequences, not observed benchmarks. Handheld Settings Lab did not personally test the current Hades II build, SteamOS version, compatibility layer, LCD or OLED Deck, battery, or thermals. No fixed runtime or search-volume claim is made.
