Steam Deck microSD speed and compatibility explained

Why the biggest speed number can mislead
A card package may lead with a peak read figure produced in a specific reader. Valve’s public specification identifies the Deck’s internal slot as UHS-I; it does not promise that every card reaches its package maximum or that one sequential-transfer figure predicts game startup.
The reader and card work as a pair
The card cannot add a host mode Valve did not list for the Deck. Paying for UHS-II or a card maker’s special reader mode may help elsewhere without changing the Deck’s internal slot.
Games are not one sequential file copy
Launching, patching, shader-cache work, and unpacking can mix large transfers with many smaller operations. No single package number represents all of those tasks.
Free space and card health matter
A nearly full, overheating, counterfeit, damaged, or unstable card can behave very differently from a genuine new card in controlled test conditions.
A1 versus A2: useful label, not a universal winner
The SD Association defines A1 and A2 as Application Performance Classes. They include minimum random-read, random-write, and sustained sequential-performance requirements under the standard’s conditions. A2 raises the specified random-I/O minimums and includes features intended to improve application workloads when the host and card support them.
That makes A2 a reasonable default shortlist filter for a new Steam Deck game card when brand, seller, warranty, capacity, and price are otherwise comparable. It does not support claiming a fixed percentage improvement, and it does not rescue a counterfeit card or turn microSD into NVMe storage.
U3 and V30 do not mean “30 MB/s game loading”
The SD Association explains that Speed Class, UHS Speed Class, and Video Speed Class symbols indicate minimum writing speed for workloads such as video recording. U3 and V30 both communicate a sustained-write class, but the symbols come from different class systems.
- Use U3/V30 as helpful evidence that a card targets a stronger sustained-write tier.
- Do not translate the number into a promised game-load time or frame-rate gain.
- Do not ignore A-class, capacity, warranty, return policy, seller, and full-capacity verification.
- Remember that one card may carry A2, U3, V30, and UHS-I marks at the same time because they describe different things.
Choose capacity by the library you will actually keep

Capacity labels use decimal marketing units, while operating systems may display usable space differently and formatting consumes some room. Leave free space for updates, temporary files, shader data, and library maintenance rather than planning to fill the card completely.
Card arrival and compatibility test
- Inspect the listing and package. Confirm model, capacity, marks, warranty region, seller, and return window match what you ordered.
- Back up anything already on the card. A Steam Deck format is destructive.
- Verify the full advertised capacity. Use a reputable full-write/read test on a computer before trusting a large library to a marketplace card. Quick capacity display alone does not expose every fake.
- Format through SteamOS for Deck game storage. Follow the safe Steam Deck microSD formatting guide rather than improvising a filesystem.
- Install one small and one representative large game. Launch both, restart the Deck, and verify the card remounts before moving the whole library.
- Watch a real update cycle. A card that installs once but throws read/write errors during patching should not be trusted with the only copy of important data.
When the SSD is the better upgrade
Choose internal NVMe storage when you want one consolidated library, regularly patch very large games, or are buying enough premium microSD capacity that an SSD upgrade is competitive. First verify the exact Steam Deck SSD form factor, recovery plan, tools, warranty implications, and comfort with opening the device.

If the card is slow, missing, or failing
- If it disappears after previously working, do not format first. Use the Steam Deck microSD not-showing-up checklist.
- If Windows offers to format a SteamOS card, cancel unless erasing the Deck library is intentional.
- If only one game is slow, compare that game’s internal-drive behavior and patch status before blaming the card.
- If every write fails or files return corrupt, stop using the card and pursue recovery, return, or warranty options.
- If performance is acceptable but capacity is tight, model the library in the storage planner before buying another card.
